With all the talk lately about how Floyd Mayweather Jr might fare against Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey, we thought it might be a good time to remind our readers of a gem of a video from 2013.
In the clip below Conor’s head coach, John Kavanagh, films “The Notorious” as he has a little MMmess about with Irish professional boxer Patrick Hyland. The “sparring” is very light, but it is also quite interesting to watch.
Poor Paddy seems both terrified and confused throughout the entire scrap. Whenever the action goes to the ground he can me heard howling “what the hell do I do” in his thick Tallaght tongue. Amidst Hyland’s torture, John Kavanagh is having a great time. When the fight hits the ground, the SBG Ireland head man just tells the boxer to try to escape, without giving him any advice about how to do so, while unsuccessfully fighting off fits of the giggles.
At the time of this session, Hyland was 27-1 as a pro, and coming off his most high profile fight to date, a points loss to Javier Fortuna, on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel Marquez 4. The Dubliner has since notched another 3 wins. The latest of which came in March of this year.
In truth this video is just a bit of fun.
Hyland is a grappling neophyte and is outweighed by a couple of stone, at the very least. Nobody would have expected any more from him than the sheer terror he displays.
To be fair to Paddy, however, he enters into the spirit of things and hilariously ends up trying as many takedowns as punches.
