UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos doesn’t appear to be particularly worried about Conor McGregor’s seemingly impending move to the 155lb division.
The Brazilian was asked by Mark Bergmann of GnP1.de if he thought McGregor could make it in the heavier weight class. RDA’s answer was an attack on the Irishman’s credentials and credibility.
“I don’t think he can succeed even in the featherweight division. He is not beating the top guys. I mean who has this guy beat. He fought Denis Siver which was a top 15, and he got a title shot against Jose Aldo. How about Frankie Edgar? How about Chad Mendes in good shape? He got ten days notice. How about, you know, Jeremy Stephens? How about Cub Swanson? All those top guys of the division. Even Charles Oliviera, the Brazilian, would kill him”
Dos Anjos added, however, that if McGregor does ascend to the lightweight division that he would be “happy to welcome him”.
“He got a big mouth, he talks well for the people. He is a comedian guy and he brings a lot of media to him. If he wants to come to the lightweight division I will be here, and I’ll make sure that I will smash him”
That certainly doesn’t sound welcoming.
This intriguing fight could happen in the not too distant future, and after their run-in at the UFC’s Go Big presser it would be an easy sell.
It definitely wouldn’t be an easy night for McGregor, however. We recently ranked the tough, rounded and strong lightweight title-holder as the second most dangerous potential opponent for “The Notorious”.
The Brazilian beast’s next battle takes place on December 19th, when he defends his gold against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.
