UFC featherweight contender Frankie Edgar was a recent guest on The Anik and Florian Podcast, and he didn’t flatter his upcoming opponent, Chad Mendes, when it came time to discuss the Team Alpha Male representative’s efforts against Conor McGregor.
The former UFC lightweight champion was asked if he felt he learned anything about his December 11th foe from his performance against the Irishman in July. In response, Edgar suggested to hosts John Anik and Kenny Florian that Mendes didn’t give it his all in pursuit of victory during the UFC 189 main event.
“I think he was looking for a way out. I know its tough coming off two weeks notice, and supposedly he broke his foot and what not, but you gotta go into every fight trying to win. You can’t be fighting for a paycheck. If you are fighting for a paycheck, I’m the wrong guy to be standing across the cage from”.
It is quite an accusation to sling at the former, two-time featherweight title contender, and one that is likely to draw a response.
Edgar also spoke a little bit about the fighter that made up the other half of that summer main event, Conor McGregor, when he was asked why it was that “The Notorious” seemed to have more respect for him than most other fighters.
“I have no idea. I’m not one to talk trash about him. I think a lot of guys take shots at him”, said Edgar, who also added “I have complimented him where it was just”.
Edgar, however, obviously didn’t feel it was “just” to pick McGregor over the reigning champion, Jose Aldo, in their sizzling showdown at UFC 194.
When he was asked for a prediction on the outcome, the man who has shared the cage with the great Brazilian stated, “Aldo is super-athletic, super-fast, and more well rounded than McGregor”.
