Whatever else happens tonight, one of the enduring moments of UFC Fight Night 76 will be Aisling Daly and the Irish fans having a sing-along to the strawweight’s walkout song, “Zombie”.
Daly’s entrance was always going to be an emotional one. The Dublin fighter, who is affectionately and accurately known as “The First Lady of Irish MMA”, is a pioneer of her sport in this country. Before anybody even knew of Conor McGregor, Daly was representing MMA on The Late, Late Show. More than just about any other fighter on this card, “Ais the Bash” deserved a special reaction from her home crowd.
And she certainly got that.
As she took off her tracksuit at cageside, Daly was quite obviously singing along to the aforementioned Cranberries tune with passion. Upon seeing this on the big screen’s in the 3Arena, the Irish fans joined in to create an unforgettable scene.
“I have goosebumps on behalf of her”, said commentator, and former fighter, Dan Hardy.
To top it all off, Daly ensured that the moment wouldn’t be looked back upon as bitter-sweet by beating Brazilian submission specialist Ericka Almeida via an extremely popular unanimous decision.
