While Conor McGregor’s loss to Nate Diaz at UFC 196 was shocking, the reality is it was hardly surprising.

Giving up his usual height, weight and reach advantage, McGregor went into the fight missing all his big weapons and the unfortunate result was his first loss in the UFC.

While the MMA world digests the loss of one of the UFC’s most prized assets, let us remember that shocks in the UFC occur more frequently than you would think. In fact, in the last year there have been numerous moments more shocking than the McGregor-Diaz result.

Here’s a look at just five (in no particular order).

1. Miesha Tate Choking Out Holly Holm

Overshadowed by Conor McGregor’s loss to Diaz, Holm unexpectedly lost her bantamweight title to Miesha Tate when she was put to sleep with a rear naked choke hold in the fifth round of their co-headline fight at UFC 196.

2. Conor McGregor Humiliating Jose Aldo

After another Aldo withdrawal and months of waiting, the top two featherweights met at UFC 194 in December 2015. History was made in a fight that lasted just 13 seconds.

Not only did Aldo lose for the first time in a decade, the knockout victory for McGregor was the fastest in UFC title history.

3. Holly Holm KOs Ronda Rousey

UFC 193 was supposed to be another title defence for the unbeaten Rousey. The undisputed queen of the bantamweight division, Rousey routinely destroyed opponents – that is until Holly Holm stepped up and stunned the UFC world with a devastating knock out kick in the second round of their title bout.

4. Robbie Lawler’s Lip At UFC 189

In what will be remembered as one of the biggest and best slugfests in UFC history, Robbie Lawler took on Rory McDonald for the welterweight title in July 2015.

What followed were five rounds of toe-to-toe action that ended with Lawler winning by TKO, but not before he had is lip split in a horrific manner. Certainly one of the most gruesome injuries in the octagon.

5. Rory McDonald’s TKO At UFC 189

The other half of one of the UFC’s greatest fights. McDonald was winning on the judge’s cards going into the final round of his title bout with Lawler.

Having received a broken nose as early as round one, McDonald fought on until finally succumbing via TKO in the fifth following repeated blows to his smashed nose. His face following the fight says it all.

While the shock of McGregor’s loss on Saturday is still fresh, it’s clear that the UFC is all about shocking moments.

This is hardly surprising when you consider that MMA is a sport where victory can come via many means, and at any time. The one thing we can be sure of is that the next big shock is never too far away.
