UFC: The Pro’s Reaction To ‘Retirement Gate’

What a week it has been in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

It has been a week like no-other with superstar Conor McGregor testing the limits of his power as he publicly challenges the establishment and taunts the general public with devious cryptic messages regarding his future in the sport.

As if the sport hadn’t been garnering enough attention already within the Irish media, featherweight champion McGregor then decides it would be best to mess with our heads and hearts by dropping a bombshell that he is to hang up the gloves, much to the dismay of the country.

In a time where the state has been operating without a government and John Giles is set to depart from our T.V screens further diminishing the presence of the ‘Fab Four’, the thought of McGregor calling it quits on the UFC was a truly harrowing one for the nation.

McGregor’s aggressive power play has split opinion among fans and pro’s alike. While he is expected to appear within the octagon again, perhaps even this year; if McGregor were to come out as the victor in this high stakes stand-off with Dana White and co. it would send serious permutations right through the promotion, shifting the balance of power somewhat to the ‘Pay-Per-View King’

McGregor’s ‘negotiating’ tactics have received a mixed reception among a number of UFC fighters with a large proportion in appraisal, who respect what the Irishman is trying to do. Perhaps this admiration is stemmed from a sense of discrimination felt by fighters due to the financial constrictions imposed upon them as a result of the Reebok deal.
