UFC Dublin Co-Main Event Fighter Withdraws, But There Is No Shortage Of Willing Late Replacements

The news broke on Tuesday evening that Stipe Miocic has had to withdraw from UFC Dublin’s co-main event, due to an injury. The UFC brass are seeking a late replacement, and it looks as though they won’t struggle to find one.

The offers have been flooding in from fighters desperate to fill the slot opposite Ben Rothwell. In fact, the competition for the place is so hot that some of the campaigners aren’t even heavyweights.

Middleweight Derek Brunson tweeted his name into the overflowing hat soon after the announcement.

Nice try, Derek.

Another unlikely replacement is Derrick Lewis. The 30-year-old is willing, and a heavyweight, but he also has a criminal record. The Texan served 5 years in prison for aggravated assault and violation of probation, and is aware that this may scupper his hopes of getting the call.

Tyrone Spong has also offered his services via social media. The Surinamese savage only has two fights on his MMA ledger, but he is an extremely experienced stand-up fighter with 83 professional fights in kickboxing and 2 professional boxing bouts to his name.

Though not yet a UFC contracted athlete, Spong had campaigned all summer long for a spot on the packed card, after being impressed by the atmosphere when he attended last year’s card in the Irish capital. It was not to be. However, he may once again be in with a shot

The willing candidate with perhaps the best chance at getting the nod is 37-year-old Indiana heavyweight Matt Mitrione.

Mitrione is actually Rothwell’s most recent octagon victim. The pair met in June at UFC Fight Night 68, with Rothwell securing a first-round submission victory via guillotine choke.

The 9-4 bruiser even broke-out the “I’m half Irish card” in his zeal to land the rematch.

It will be interesting to see what way the UFC go with this one. At this late stage, it is unlikely that they will find a fighter as highly regarded as Miocic, who is the number-3 ranked heavyweight contender, but hopefully whoever they choose will give the fans their money’s worth.

UFC Fight Night 76 from Dublin’s 3Arena takes place October 24th, and is headlined by a lightweight contest between Ireland’s Joseph Duffy and Dustin Poirier.
