Twitter Reacts As Amanda Nunes Retains Title Via Decision After Tactical Battle With Valentina Shevchenko

Valentina Shevchenko was absolutely livid in Edmonton on Saturday night when Bruce Buffer revealed that two of the three judges scoring her fight with UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes believed the Brazilian had just about done enough through five rounds to retain her title.

And she didn’t hide that fact in a passionate, intense, and, frankly, quite scary post-fight interview with Joe Rogan.

Shevchenko’s indignation, while understandable in the heat of the moment, was perhaps a little over the top. The fight was a very tactical one throughout, with neither fighter doing really significant damage at any point. Almost every single round was close and difficult to score. When the buzzer sounded at the end of the fifth and final stanza, a split decision seemed inevitable.

Still, there were those who agreed with the Russian’s assessment. Noise coming from the stands during the post-fight interviews suggested that the majority of fans at Rogers Place disagreed with the official verdict and on Twitter some cried ‘robbery’.

Others agreed quite strongly with the judges.

Most, however, acknowledged that the fight had been a tight affair and that neither result would have been a travesty.

The big question now is; are we headed toward a third fight? Amanda Nunes is 2-0 against Valentina Shevchenko, but neither of her wins were entirely convincing. With a dearth of interesting, deserving and fresh challengers at the top of the women’s bantamweight division, a trilogy-completing battle seems somewhat logical. Do fans want to see it though?
