Twitter: James Gallagher And His Coach John Kavanagh React To Bellator 158 Victory

James Gallagher made a successful Bellator MMA debut tonight at the O2 Arena in London, but the SBG Ireland product was forced to go the distance for the first time in his professional career by tough Englishman Mike Cutting.

In fact, this marked the first time that ‘The Strabanimal’ was extended beyond the opening round since he entered the paid ranks last October.

Still, Gallagher looked impressive throughout the 148lb catchweight contest and ran out a 30-27 winner on all three judges scorecards. With the victory he moves to 4-0.

The failure to secure the finish may have disappointed the fighter himself, but his coach John Kavanagh, who is currently in the United States preparing Conor McGregor for a UFC 202 clash with Nate Diaz, saw the positives in the three-round contest.

After the fight, an emotional Gallagher spoke about how much it meant for him to win on such a big stage, but he was far more critical of his own performance than Kavanagh. However, the 19-year-old did express pride in his achievement.

I have been through it all this past few months! Tonight for me was about beating myself. I came through everything put endless hours in and beat myself. Tonight I can truly say I am proud of myself for the first time ever in my life. I am not proud of my performance but I am proud of myself! I preformed at half my abilities but I beat my own mind with the help of my parents my two brothers my coach John Kavanagh and my other brother from another mother Kiefer Crosbie , Cian Cowley and Lee Hammond they all have a big part for just even getting me here today and I can’t put into words! Tonight for me was to beat myself now it’s time to go beat others and start making statements. I AM HUMBLED I done it, I beat myself! Thank you!! I hope I done strabane and Ireland proud ?? this is something I’ve dream of since I’ve been a kid!
