Badass John McCarthy Reveals Nasty Method He Used To Force Tito Ortiz To Release Choke At Bellator 170

Veteran referee ‘Big’ John McCarthy was not at all happy with Tito Ortiz when the former UFC light-heavyweight champion held on to a rear-naked choke for several seconds after rival Chael Sonnen had submitted last Saturday night at Bellator 170.

However, McCarthy doesn’t agree with calls from some fans for the now retired Ortiz to be punished more seriously for the infraction.

Why? Well, for two reasons. One being the fact that he dealt Ortiz a swift serving of justice inside the cage.

We believe you John.

In case you didn’t notice McCarthy’s little trick on first viewing of the finish, here is the clip again. Note the immediacy of Ortiz’s release after the official applies pressure.

McCarthy went on to clarify his “Chael was never in danger” statement in a later tweet.

Thankfully, one fan also asked the follow-up question that we were dying to ask. “Thumb to the larynx? Is that standard refereeing protocol?”

Ortiz got a pretty serious scolding from ‘Big’ John just after he finished celebrating the victory. The fact that a man like Tito just stood there and took it like an obedient school kid says an awful lot about the respect that fighters have for McCarthy.

Then again, it’s probably tough to answer back when your voice box is recovering from a solid thumbing.

While Ortiz rides off into the sunset and retirement, McCarthy will continue to do the job that he has been doing so admirably since all the way back in 1995.
