This is a major setback for Tony Ferguson…

The lightweight division is arguably the UFC’s ‘difficult child’, with the situation at the moment a tricky proposition to manage.

Conor McGregor currently holds the belt, despite not have fought in 13 months. The growing frustrations of those stuck behind the Irishman are evident, considering that McGregor has never defended a belt within the promotion after 24 months as a champion.

Interim champion Tony Ferguson is the next in line for a crack at the Notorious One, if and when the Irishman returns to the octagon.

However, there are concerns within MMA circles that McGregor will not return, and therefore the sport will lose one of its biggest stars.

There is another delay at the top of the division now, as it has emerged that Ferguson is facing time out with injury.

According to MMA Fighting, the 33-year-old underwent surgery on his elbow, and his facing time out of action. While there is no fixed time period as to when he could return, and he is set to be out for an “indeterminate” amount of time.

This was announced by Ferguson’s wide on her Instagram account.

“In good spirits even after elbow surgery. Praying for a speedy recovery baby…”

Here’s hoping we see Ferguson back in the octagon sooner rather than later.
