On the latest edition of The Fighting Irish podcast we hear from two of the hottest prospects in Irish MMA, Blaine O’Driscoll and Will Fleury, who have fights coming up at BAMMA 30 and Cage Legacy 3 respectively.
While four quality veterans are the headline attractions, BAMMA 30 is really more of a showcase of the future stars of MMA in the U.K. and Ireland.
The main event of this Friday’s show at the 3Arena in Dublin is a fight for the vacant BAMMA bantamweight title between Alan Philpott(16-9) and Shay Walsh(16-4), two former victims of the artistically savage Tom Duquesnoy, who vacated the belt when he departed for the UFC recently. In the co-main, former UFC lightweight Paul ‘Redser’ Redmond(11-6) takes on English veteran Rob ‘C4’ Sinclair(13-4).
The card beneath them, however, is heaving with future promise and yet to be realized potential.
One of the most promising young Irish fighters competing on the card is Pundit Arena sponsored bantamweight Blaine O’Driscoll, who is coming off of an ultra impressive stoppage win over fellow prospect Darren O’Gorman last time out. Though he is a novice pro, with only five fights in the paid ranks to his name, the 4-1 O’Driscoll is a veteran of the 3Arena stage and he told us that he feels unstoppable at the Dublin venue.
“It’s my fourth time [fighting at the 3Arena]. I feel unstoppable in there,” the 25-year-old told The Fighting Irish podcast on Monday. “Everything, every time, just feels so familiar. It’s like a routine, you know? I feel so confident when I’m in that arena. It’s mad, I feel nobody can beat me in that arena.”
A couple of weeks after BAMMA 30, Cage Legacy 3 and Will Fleury storm into Cork City. Fleury, a 2-0 SBG Ireland middleweight who compiled a glittering amateur record of 7-0, faces Allstars product Simon Rosenholm. Hungry for challenges and not gimme fights, Fleury is hoping that the Swede is as talented and game as he looks on film.
“I’ve just watched a couple of YouTube videos of him from a few years ago,” Will told us. “He’s got tidy stand-up, he is nice and tight, he does everything quite well, he was 12-3 as an amateur, he has been fighting for about 10 years and he is out of Allstars. I think he is going to be a quality opponent. I hope he is quite good because I’d like an opportunity to display the skills that I’ve got.”
“Hopefully he comes game and he comes to fight and we’ll have to get through a little bit and put on a show and give the fans something to shout about.”
Cage Legacy 3 takes place on July 22nd at the Neptune Stadium in Cork.
