Chael Sonnen Explains Why Stripping Conor McGregor Is ‘Good For Business’

Dana White has confirmed that Conor McGregor will be stripped of his UFC lightweight title once Khabib and Ferguson step foot in the octagon. Former UFC middleweight contender Chael Sonnen believes that this is good business by the UFC.

It’s been long speculated that McGregor would be stripped if this fight comes to fruition, and though that is yet to happen, it does look likely now that we will have a new UFC lightweight champion.

Back in McGregor’s earlier days, he was constantly compared to one other fighter. Prior to McGregor, the UFC had a different trash-talker, and that was the American Gangster Chael Sonnen.

Sonnen is no longer employed by the UFC and is currently a Bellator heavyweight contender, however he does still know a thing or two about business and the UFC. Sonnen believes this is good business by the UFC.

Sonnen, who was defeated in all three of his title shots in the UFC feels it is far more marketable to have McGregor come back for the belt he never actually lost. He may have a point.

The Bellator fighter stated on his podcast:

“I like to strip him because I think it’s better for business, I like the headline when Conor returns that he has returned to claim the championship that he never lost, and I think you go from there.

“I don’t see any advantage to him business-wise to him walking out with the belt – as opposed to him fighting for it, and leaving with the belt, I don’t see it and I don’t get it.”

Sonnen does go on to say that it doesn’t really matter to him whether Conor is the champion or not, he is going to watch McGregor fight either way.

The 40-year-old does also believe that stripping McGregor is the best decision due to the fact that Ferguson and Khabib deserve to fight for the real belt.
