There Was Some Scathing Reaction To Conor McGregor Winning RTE Sportsperson Of The Year

Despite Conor McGregor being voted the RTE Sportsperson of the Year on Saturday, it seems there is still a long way to go before Ireland’s public even accepts, let alone embraces, MMA and ‘The Notorious’ one.

In what was a much assumed announcement, McGregor beat the likes of Carl Frampton and Daryl Horgan to the title and though he was not on hand to receive his award in person, he did issue a statement thanking RTE and his fans.

“Thank you so much to the fans for voting for me for RTÉ’s Sports Person of the Year.

“I’m extremely grateful and extremely blessed to have the support of my home country.

“Thank you RTÉ as well. I’m sorry I couldn’t make the awards ceremony. You know I love to stick on a good suit and roll into these awards ceremonies and collect an award so I’m a little bit upset about that.

“Thank you RTÉ. Thank you to the fans. Thanks so much. It’s been a hell of a year and I look forward to 2017.”

It appears however that he doesn’t have the support of everyone in Ireland as following the announcement, some have taken to social media to voice their disgust.

So it appears that this country of ours is still having a difficult time accepting the fact that we have a double world champion who has redefined his chosen profession and has become its biggest star.

One thing that could be pretty much assumed however, is that Conor McGregor is not one single bit bothered by those who continue to hate him.
