Report: Michael Bisping Has Verbally Agreed To Meet Dan Henderson In October

A report published by Brazilian MMA media outlet Combate on Friday, claims that newly crowned UFC middleweight king Michael Bisping has verbally agreed to face Dan Henderson in October.

Journalists Marcelo Barone and Marcelo Russio did not reveal their sources in the report, but added that an official announcement was expected in the coming weeks.

If this fight does indeed get made, it will be a truly remarkable story.

An improbable series of events brought Bisping to the summit of the middleweight division earlier this month, after years of ups and downs. The English veteran stepped in on only a couple of weeks notice to replace the injured Chris Weidman in the main event of UFC 199, and stunned the MMA world by destroying fancied champion Luke Rockhold inside the first round.

Earlier the same night, Henderson mangled Hector Lombard and subsequently suggested that he might retire, but Bisping’s victory got him thinking differently. Holding a previous win over ‘The Count’, which he scored in famously brutal fashion at UFC 100, ‘Hendo’ realised that he might be able to talk his way into a title shot and he began to campaign for the fight.

That campaign now seems to have been successful.

It’s a wonderful fight in many ways, with themes of endurance, personal animosity and revenge sure to feature in the promotional narrative. It appears also to be the last-hoorah for a true legend of the sport.

However, as romantic and remarkable as it is, this bout will be seen as unjust by some.

Henderson may be an all-time great, but his best days are well behind him. The former two-division PRIDE FC champion is 45 years old and he has lost six of his last nine fights. Three of those losses have come via KO/TKO, a worrying statistic considering that he had never been stopped in this fashion in his first 39 fights.

Currently sitting at number 13 in the UFC’s official middleweight rankings, Henderson has not earned this fight and he is jumping a queue of legitimately deserving contenders to get it.
