UFC heavyweight Matt Mitrione didn’t look too pretty after his fight with Travis Browne at UFC Fight Night 81 on Sunday.
The former NFL defensive tackle was coming into this bout off the back of a submission defeat to Ben Rothwell, and with his contract ending after the fight he had spoken about the possibility of retirement.
“I’m not afraid to walk away,” Mitrione told MMAJunkie. “I’ve got a life set up enough. I’m not thinking about it, but if Travis smokes me, or if I don’t get the money that I want after Travis, then I could easily walk away”.
Browne may not have “smoked” him, but he did ground out a brutal 3rd round stoppage, and if “Meathead” needed any more encouragement to call it a day, he may have gotten it from a quick glance in a locker room mirror following the fight.
Mitrione’s eye swelled grotesquely in the second round as a result of the cumulative effect of two eye-pokes and a big shot from “Hapa”, who wasn’t admonished at all for the second infringement.

Instead, Browne was able to capitalize on the situation to log the 14th stoppage win of his professional career, bouncing back from a 2015 defeat to Andre Arlovski.
Browne, however, did apologize to Mitrione for the eye-pokes as the pair stood awaiting the official announcement.
The swelling had calmed down slightly by the time The Ultimate Fighter alumnus took to his own Twitter account to provide an update, but the diagnosis wasn’t a positive one.
Broken orbital floor. This and the shoulder happened after the 2nd eye poke. I don't think they would've happened pic.twitter.com/wFn1NC3j5Y
