Nate Diaz sent the world of MMA fans and pundits alike into frenzy earlier this week when he announced that he will be making his eagerly awaited UFC return this summer.
The Stockton brawler confirmed via his Instagram account that he is tired of waiting around for someone to entice him back into competitive mixed martial arts and he is finally taking the initiative to make a comeback to the Octagon, where he was last seen in August of 2016.
That UFC 202 loss to Conor McGregor now seems like an eternity ago and Nate’s return to action is now long overdue, most combat sport fans would agree.
During his self-imposed hiatus from the sport, his nemesis went on to clinch the UFC Lightweight Championship to become the first fighter in the history of the promotion to hold titles in two different weight classes simultaneously before further transcending the landscape of combat sports by competing against the legendary, undefeated Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match.
While Conor has the matter of defending his 155-lb belt against the winner of the UFC 223 main event between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov to deal with, in the meantime the question is, who will Diaz face upon his comeback?
A Nate Diaz vs. Eddie Alvarez showdown has truthfully been in the making for years. It is a bout that makes sense for both fighters right now in terms of their respective rankings in the lightweight division and one which MMA fans could not resist.
Both Diaz and Alvarez have suffered at the hands of McGregor in recent outings and while a trilogy throwdown between the 209 native and the Irishman some time in the future appears to be a formality, the winner of Nate vs. Eddie could be springboarded into a rematch with the UFC’s biggest star sooner rather than later.
