Middleweight Legend Weighs In On Jon Jones Arrest

Following the arrest of Jon Jones earlier this week due to traffic violations, the mixed martial arts community has had its say on the former champions incarceration, among them, one of the UFC’s greatest fighters.

Anderson Silva is no stranger to controversy and whilst promoting his UFC 198 against Uriah Hall, he shared his thoughts (via MMA Fighting) on Jones’ recent run-in with the law and how the Ultimate Fighting Championship need to step in and help the fighter.

“I’m upset because he’s a young kid who has some insecurity, but he’s a good kid,” “The Spider” said to media in Curitiba, Brazil.

“I think the UFC should have some training for these young talents they have, those potential new champions, the UFC should train them so they can deal with this thing of victories, money, fame. They should do this. Like some soccer teams do today.”

Before Jones was arrested and detained at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the former light-heavyweight champion had a heated exchange with the police officer who stopped him for the aforementioned traffic violations, all of which was captured on the officer’s body cam.

Silva didn’t see the footage and only found out about the situation from his son.

“I was really upset,” Silva said. “My son Kalyl, a big fan of his, was the one to give me the news. He’s a huge fan. He cries and everything when he watches him fight. I was upset for my son. My son is a fan, and (Jon Jones) has many other fans.

It’s tough because he’s a big friend and a big idol, and I’m sorry that that’s happening with him again.”

Jones is scheduled to face Daniel Cormier at UFC 197 next month but depending on what punishment the judge overlooking his probation decides to dish out, we might not see Jones at the event.

UFC 198 takes place on may 14th at the Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, Brazil, with the event headlined by heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum, who defends his belt against Stipe Miocic.
