Michael Page’s Brutal Flying Knee Actually Fractured Evangelista ‘Cyborg’ Santos’ Skull

Evangelista ‘Cyborg’ Santos requires surgery following his second round KO defeat to England’s Michael Page at Bellator 158 on Saturday night.

According to MMA journalist Nick Strickland, the Brazilian veteran suffered a depressed fracture of the skull as a result of Page’s fight-ending flying knee.

No updates on the condition of the fighter are currently available.

The serious nature of Santos’ injury won’t come as a major surprise to anyone who witnessed the finish of the fight. Even by Page’s standards, this looked particularly vicious. But for some added perspective, check out what veteran referee ‘Big’ John McCarthy, who was the third man in the cage for the welterweight contest, had to say about the KO.

Page, nicknamed ‘Venom’, has become one of the most hyped fighters in all of MMA due to his penchant for the spectacular. His victory over Santos moved the lanky London Shootfighters product to 11-0 as a professional, a run that has seen Page extended the distance on only one occasion.

However, the excitement surrounding the 29-year-old prospect has been tempered somewhat by questions surrounding his level of opposition. The bulk of Page’s record is made up of lightly-regarded unknowns and journeymen. In Santos, he was facing a fighter with some name value and a slightly higher pedigree, but in reality this was yet another mismatch. At 38 years old, ‘Cyborg’ came into the fight with a 21-17 overall record and was looking to rebound from a first-round stoppage defeat.

With Santos suffering such a horrific injury though, this issue has become about more than just judging a fighter’s potential or deciding whether he is worthy of the hype.

After he learned of the Santos’ woes, Iain Kidd of BloodyElbow, went on something of a Twitter rant about the dangers of such lopsided matchmaking in the sport of MMA.
