Former Strikeforce Champion, UFC fighter and current MMA analyst with ESPN, Gilbert Melendez, has claimed that Nate Diaz is in line for another mega fight in the not too distant future.
Having participated in two epic brawls with Conor McGregor at UFC 196 and UFC 202, interest in Nate Diaz’s next fight is absolutely massive. Having already had a solid fan base, Diaz picked up countless new supporters over the course of his enthralling six month saga with the ‘Notorious’ Irishman.
In fact, there is such adoration for the younger Diaz brother at present that the Stockton brawler is now regarded as one of the UFC’s biggest stars in his own right.
Speaking about Nate’s future in the UFC, owner of San Francisco’s El Nino Training Center and MMA analyst, Gilbert Melendez, said that Nate will be lined up to face the winner of the UFC 205 main event.
“I think [Nate] fights the winner [of Alvarez vs McGregor],” said Melendez speaking to Champions. “We’re talking about business here and how things work … Eddie wins that fight, you know, I think Nate gets that fight. I think Conor wins that fight, I think Nate gets that fight as well.
I mean, that’s what people want to see and that’s what fills the seats.”
Although a Nate Diaz fight for the lightweight title would certainly rack up the pay-per-view buys, there are a number of reasons why this potential bout won’t happen.
Khabib Nurmagomedov has already felt shafted by the fact that he was recently overlooked for a shot at the lightweight title despite the fact that is undefeated in the promotion. Jose Aldo continues to campaign for another shot at McGregor with his coach only today announcing that they had identified February or March as a potential rematch date with the Irishman.
Meanwhile, rumours of Conor announcing a career break after UFC 205 continue to swirl as the SBG star is consistently building hype around a big impending ‘announcement’.
Whatever happens next, here at Pundit HQ, we just hope that Nate Diaz’s next bout will be announced sooner rather than later.
