A rematch between Luke Rockhold and Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza has been cancelled due to Rockhold suffering an undisclosed injury in training.
The news broken by MMAFighting.com this evening states that Rockhold’s withdrawal has resulted in the cancellation of the scheduled main event of the UFC’s return to Australia on November 26th.
It is currently unknown whether a replacement will be found or if ‘Jacare’ will also be withdrawn from the event.
Luke Rockhold hasn’t fought since losing the UFC Middleweight Championship to Michael Bisping at UFC 199, while ‘Jacare’ is currently the number two ranked middleweight contender after defeating Vitor Belfort in the first round at UFC 198.
It was expected that a win for either fighter could have lead to a new number one contender for Bisping’s middleweight title. The two men previously fought before in 2011 for the Strikeforce Middleweight Championship, with Rockhold winning the bout via unanimous decision
It hasn’t been announced yet when or against who Rockhold and Souza will fight next, although this latest development could lead to the winner of the bout between Chris Weidman and Yoel Romero at UFC 205 being chosen as the next number one contender.
