A Number Of Lengthy Medical Suspensions Were Handed Down Following UFC 200

The “biggest, baddest card in UFC History” was a slogan rammed down our throats for the past few weeks, but it’s a card that could have lasting implications for the promotion’s matchmakers going forward.

The true toll of the fights at UFC 200 was truly realised on Tuesday, with the release of some severe medical suspensions that will probably keep five fighters off the canvas until 2017.

Miesha Tate’s nose was still pumping blood over thirty minutes after her loss to Amanda Nunes on Saturday night, so it’s hardly surprising that she is facing a lengthy period on the sidelines. She may have no contest for a full six months unless she is medically cleared. Given how her former bantamweight title has changed hands in the past twelve months, the division may be in a very different place upon “Cupcake’s” return.

After being harshly criticised for the way in which he tapped to Bryan Barberena, Sage Northcutt’s escape from Enrique Marin’s armbar showed some real guts, but it could also cost him six months of his career due to a left elbow injury. Following his brutal loss to Cain Velasquez, Travis “Hapa” Browne has damaged his wrist and could also spend half a year out of competition.

Elsewhere, Anderson Silva is suspended for a short forty five days after his decision loss to Anderson Silva. While similar suspensions were handed to Mark Hunt after his loss to the returning beast Brock Lesnar and Frankie Edgar following a five-round defeat to Jose Aldo.

The full list of UFC 200 medical suspensions includes:

  • Miesha Tate: Must have broken nose cleared by doctor or no contest for 185 days; minimum suspension 60 days with no contact for 45 days
  • Mark Hunt: Suspended 45 days with no contact for 30 days
