Decky McAleenan’s pro career didn’t get off to the smoothest of starts, as he was choked into submission inside a round in his maiden outing at Chaos FC 15 in Derry on December 5th 2015.
The young Newry featherweight wasn’t exactly matched easy in his debut though. His opponent that night was an already 1-0 James ‘The Strabanimal’ Gallagher, who was just one more win and eight months away from his Bellator MMA debut.
While Gallagher has since scored another five victories and established himself as the hottest prospect in North America’s second biggest MMA promotion, McAleenan has quietly but quite impressively rebounded.
Injury woes kept him out of action in 2016, but 2017 has seen the Team Torres fighter score three straight wins, all inside the distance. The latest of those victories came at Cage Legacy 5 on Sunday night, and it came in spectacular fashion.
Fighting in front of a raucous crowd at the Canal Court Hotel in his home town, McAleenan drilled Poland’s Adam Gustab, who came into the fight sporting a 3-1 record, with a highlight-reel flying-knee before finishing him off with a ruthless barrage of punches.

McAleenan, who had a lengthy and largely successful amateur career before making the jump to the pro ranks, can obviously shift tickets and finish fights, so watch this space.
