Khabib Nurmagomedov Slams Conor McGregor Over Unravelling UFC 205 Situation

Burnley

At present, the main event of UFC 205 is up in the air as negotiations between the promotion, Conor McGregor and Eddie Alvarez have reached a stand still.

On Wednesday evening, Dana White announced that the aforementioned bout had essentially been scrapped and instead, the company were trying to finalise a fight between the champion and the highly intimidating Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The Russian stands undefeated with a jaw dropping professional record of 23-0 and is currently ranked as the number one contender in the UFC’s lightweight division.

However, given McGregor’s superstar status, coupled with the fact that he is the reigning featherweight champion in the promotion, the general consensus is that the Irishman is still being given first preference in terms of a shot at the lightweight crown.

Speaking to MMAFighting.com, Khabib stated that the fact that the Notorious is even being considered for a shot at the 155 title is unjust and that it is he who should be in line for a fight with Alvarez.

Also speaking about McGregor’s last victory over Nate Diaz at UFC 202, the Russian claimed that if either men fought any number of contenders in the welterweight division, it would not end well for them.

“I think at 170 pounds a lot of people can kill both [McGregor and Diaz]. This is my opinion. If we look at the lightweight division, I think a lot of guys can beat these guys. Edson Barboza, Tony Ferguson, Dos Anjos, Michael Johnson, a lot of guys can beat those guys. I think this is a big money fight and that’s it. I don’t think this is a high level fight.

“For me it’s very interesting, how will Conor look when he comes to the lightweight division? For me, I think his weight is 155 , but if he wants to fight for the title he needs to take somebody like a top five fighter. If he beats him, he deserves a title shot, I agree. But now if the UFC gives him a title shot, I don’t agree because I am the next in the line.”

Ironically, the last fight Conor won was against a man who is currently ranked at number five in the 155 lbs division. However, continuing on from his initial jab, ‘The Eagle’ stated that he can see things ending well for him no matter what happens next as, inevitably, he will get a shot at McGregor or the lightweight belt. Potentially, even both.

“I’m still focused. If the UFC gives him a title shot, it’s okay. I’m a little bit not happy and at the same time I’m a little bit happy, because if the UFC gives him a title shot and he becomes lightweight champion and I win somebody like a top five guy, then we have to fight and he has to fight with me…

Most believe that Nurmagomedov’s ferocious wrestling ability would make him the most difficult prospect for McGregor in the lightweight division and, should the two eventually meet, it is the Russian who would enter the cage as the heavy favourite.
