Having obsessed over a rematch with Conor McGregor for close to a year, Jose Aldo has now claimed that he is all set to realize that ambition.
Jose Aldo had been undefeated for over a decade before Conor McGregor sent him plummeting to the canvas 13 seconds into their featherweight title bout at UFC 194.
Since then, McGregor has become the lightweight champion, while Jose Aldo has become the interim champion, retired, un-retired and once again been named the undisputed featherweight king after the UFC elected to strip the SBG man of his 145 lbs belt.
However, despite the fact that he is once again the official champion in his division, Aldo has not taken his focus from securing a rematch with the man who embarrassed him last December.
Speaking recently, Aldo had made some claims that he was considering a move up to lightweight in order to hunt down a 155 lbs title fight with McGregor. Those claims were not taken very seriously however as most seemed certain that the Brazilian would face interim featherweight champion Max Holloway at UFC 208 next February.
However, speaking to MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani, the Brazilian has now made an extraordinary claim, stating that the UFC are in the process of booking him an interim lightweight title bout next March.
So, in the end, do you think you will fight Max Holloway in Brooklyn on Feb. 11?
No, the Brooklyn fight is not happening. I now expect and believe I will be fighting in early March. Either March 3 or March 4, I can’t remember. I believe they will soon announce an interim lightweight title fight with me. They’ve been trying to find me an opponent, and — surprise, surprise — at least one has already turned down the fight against me. I’m waiting to see who they will find.
Wow. I didn’t expect that. Who turned it down?
You gotta ask the UFC that. They’ve asked me not to say anything. I won’t say who it is because it’s a surprise. A guy we never thought would turn it down turned it down, because his father didn’t think it was good. I’m tired of people turning down fights. I want to put some pressure so they’ll take the fight.
Given the Russian’s relationship with his father, it seems that Aldo is suggesting that Khabib Nurmagomedov is the one who has refused an interim bout with the Brazilian. However, up until this point, the only interim bout that has been mooted was between Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson, with the pair constantly firing shots at each other on Twitter.
It’s hard to know what reaction this one will get from the lightweight division, but we are certainly awaiting Khabib’s response with baited breath…
