John Kavanagh, long time coach of UFC star Conor McGregor is currently in Glasgow. At a press conference this evening, he provided the strongest hint yet at McGregor’s next opponent.
Despite his failure to make weight for an interim title shot, Conor McGregor wishes to face Khabib Nurmagomedov in his next bout. At least that’s according to his coach John Kavanagh.
Kavanagh told MMA Junkie of his fighter’s reasonings.
“He seems very, very motivated to go to Russia in December, I don’t know if he’s been watching Rocky IV or something like that.”
There are a number of reasons why McGregor would be eager to take on the Russian.
Firstly, Nurmagomedov is one of the few UFC fighters with a trait that McGregor supposedly cannot beat. ‘The Eagle’ is undefeated and has proven to be a machine in the grappling exchanges.
This of course is marked as the Irish man’s weakness, despite his lack of issues in the department in recent times.
Secondly, ‘The Notorious’ wishes for the fight to take place in Russia, home nation of Nurmagomedov. This would be interesting for a number of reasons.
The fight would of course be huge in Russia, where both fighters are mega stars. McGregor actually has a large Russian following.
Despite the popularity of McGregor, this could prove to be the first time he plays the heel for a fight. Surely the crowd would favour their home fighter on this occasion.
At this point of his career, it’s highly possible that Khabib is one of the few fighters who can excite Conor.
