Following on from their massive success at the IMMAF World Championships back in July, from which they took home one gold, two silver and three bronze medals, Team Ireland had a another strong showing at the second ever IMMAF European Open Championships in Prague this week.
Though they couldn’t quite match the six-medal haul that saw Ireland top the international medal table at the Las Vegas-based event and no Irish fighter managed to claim gold on this occasion, the team did secure two silvers and a bronze.
Two of those came in the same weight-class, as Alexander O’Sullivan of the C-MAC gym and SBG’s Lee Hammond both medalled at lightweight.
O’Sullivan won twice to book his place in the semi-final stage, but there he lost a unanimous decision to world silver medallist, Bulgaria’s Ferdun Osmanov. Thus, he had to be content with the bronze.
Hammond, who had to win three fights to guarantee himself at least a bronze, went one better, submitting England’s Milad Ahady at the penultimate stage. Ultimately though, he would fall victim to the same man that banished his teammate to the lowest step on the podium – Osmanov.
The final was a close run thing, as was reflected in the split decision, but while Hammond looked to get the better of the striking, Osmanov scored takedowns at vital junctures and that was probably what swung the bout in his favour. Hammond very nearly pulled a dramatic finish out at the death though.

It was Fogarty himself who scooped Ireland’s other medal.
The SBG Charlestown/East Coast Jiu-jitsu Academy product has become Ireland’s most decorated amateur fighter, having already won a European bronze and a world silver before making the flyweight final in Prague. However, he couldn’t complete his IMMAF medal collection on this occasion. ‘Yogurty’ lost a unanimous decision to Sweden’s Serdar Atlas in the final.
