IAPA Start Crowd Funding Initiative To Offer Financial Support To Joao Carvalho’s Family

On Tuesday, SBG head coach John Kavanagh pledged the assistance of the Irish Amateur Pankration Association, of which he is president, in any investigation process that arises from the death of Joao Carvalho.

Kavanagh and the IAPA, the organisation that oversee’s MMA in Ireland, have also offered their support to the family of the Portuguese fighter, by setting up a GoFundMe account to help cover “funeral and related costs”.

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of Portuguese MMA competitor, Joao Carvalho,” reads the IAPA statement. “On Saturday, April 9, Joao suffered a medical issue following his bout at Total Extreme Fighting (TEF) Championship at the National Stadium in Dublin, Ireland. Our condolences and thoughts are with Joao’s family and friends”.

So far, the initiative has raised over 6,000 euros on it’s way to a goal of 20,000.

This is the second such crowdfunding page to be set up in aid of Carvalho, as a fan named Declan Larkin had already created an opportunity for people to contribute donations on He has set a more modest target of £5,000 and has thus far raised £1,576 or 31%.

The 28-year-old Carvalho, a representative of Team Nobrega, died Monday night at Beaumont hosptial in Dublin following a 3rd round TKO defeat to SBG’s Charlie Ward at the inaugural TEF event, which took place on Saturday evening.

The tragic fight was the 3rd in a professional career that had started out with one victory and one defeat.

This story has become headline news worldwide, and has caused much debate in Ireland about the integrity, legitimacy and safety of the sport.
