MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani reported late Wednesday night that SBG’s Gunnar Nelson is set to headline UFC Fight Night 99 on the 19th of November at the SSE Arena in Belfast.
The card marks the first time since 2007 that the UFC will be returning to Northern Ireland with Nelson reportedly set to face off against Korean welterweight Dong Hyun Kim in the main event.
The UFC has yet to officially confirm the fight with Nelson’s bout the first fight reportedly slated for the event.
Nelson is currently ranked 12th in the UFC’s welterweight division (just one place behind Kim) and is also coming off the back of a performance of the night victory against Albert Tumenov in May.
Nelson’s prospective opponent Kim hasn’t fought since his November 2015 win over Dominic Waters at UFC Fight Night 79, but Kim was however scheduled to fight Neil Magny at UFC 202, until he was forced to pull out of the fight due to a knee injury he sustained in training.
Helwani’s report is further strengthened by comments from Nelson’s coach John Kavanagh, who told Helwani on his show earlier this week that SBG would have a big announcement to make this week regarding his other fighters.
Kavanagh also indicated to Helwani that Helwani already knew what he was talking about saying “I’ve a big announcement this week regarding one of my other fighters, but there’s some big things coming up that we’re going to focus on right now rather than go straight into another fight.
“You probably know already though [Kavanagh said to Helwani]. I don’t think you’d be surprised, you tend to tell me these things.”
The UFC’s last show in Belfast was a sell out which saw Rich Franklin defeat Yushin Okami by unanimous decision in June 2007.
