One of Ireland’s greatest ever boxers, Steve Collins, has made a bold claim by backing Conor McGregor to shock the world in his potential bout with Floyd Mayweather.
Long before Ireland’s most known fighter was McGregor, Collins was busy putting Ireland on the map. The 52-year-old was a champion in two weight divisions, both middleweight and super-middleweight.
Collins has previously stated his admiration for The Notorious, with McGregor also showing huge respect to Collins. At one point prior to the Crumlin man’s early UFC fight with Max Holloway, there were talks of Collins walking McGregor to the octagon.
Nowadays the 28-year-old is by far the bigger name, but Collins is still as huge a fan as ever. The Celtic Warrior labelled McGregor as the greatest fighter our country has ever produced.
Speaking to MMA Junkie, the fellow Dubliner has backed McGregor to shock the world by defeating Mayweather.
“Maybe Mayweather has the same feeling as me, and maybe that’s why the fight has happened sooner, but I can see how Conor can beat Mayweather with the right coaching, I could tell you how he could beat Mayweather. I can see him doing it. A victory for Conor is something that can definitely happen, and I think he will shock the world.
“He has the tools and the ability. If he prepares the right way, he won’t just beat Mayweather – he’ll stop him.”
Needless to say, this is a bold call by Collins. With the majority of the world believing it is only a matter of how Mayweather will win.
The Cabra native does appear to be more in the know than most when it comes to this fight, however. Collins revealed that he received calls in relation to the fight as early as a year ago.
“Last year, there was a guy that was in touch with me, and he was also trying to get in touch with Conor McGregor, at the stage, there was already a lot of things happening in the background to try to put this Mayweather fight together.
“This is a guy that I know for 20 years. He was involved in my career. When he said it could happen if it was put together the right way, I knew it was a possibility.”
It seems more likely now than ever before that this fight will take place. Interest levels should go through the roof were the fight to be announced.
The legendary Irish fighter is one of the few to show faith in McGregor. Could he be proven right?
