The atmosphere at UFC Fight Night 46 from Dublin obviously left a lasting impression upon the promotions entire roster, because it seems every fighter wants to book a spot on the upcoming show in the Irish capital.
“Dublin would be my Vegas”, said Paul Redmond in a recent interview with the42.ie. It comes as no surprise to hear a born and bred Dub talking like that. Nor is it surprising to see Neil Seery or Aisling Daly campaigning with all their might, through social media, for a spot on the card in their hometown. Gunnar Nelson may be Icelandic, but he has been adopted by Irish MMA fans, and he too is looking to throwdown on October 24th.
Even Conor McGregor, who at this point has probably outgrown Fight Night cards, was willing to hop straight back into action, following his knockout of Chad Mendes, if it meant being included.
The Irish contingent, however, are not the only ones looking to launch leather Liffey side.
In the last few weeks Dana White and UFC matchmaker, Sean Shelby, have been inundated with requests from their talent roster. Sam Alvey and Bradely Scott have a twitter campaign going. Tyrone Spong also put himself forward for a spot during an interview with mixedmartialarts.com. “I love Ireland, the fans love me over there”, said the dynamite dutchman.
The latest fighter to join the queue is Swedish “Sledgehammer” Ilir Latifi.
Facebook was Latifi’s outlet of choice in trying to book himself a spot, as he tried to coax Fabio Maldonado into joining him. “You are a great warrior and I heard that you can get ready in six weeks for a fight”, said Latifi to his Brazilian counterpart before popping the big question, “what about we put on a show for the Irish fans at UFC Dublin?”. The Swede’s motivation for wanting to get on the show is simple. He was on the last event in Dublin and he really had the craic. “The crowd and atmosphere was fantastic”, said the exciting light-heavyweight.
Unfortunately for all of these fighters the card is filling up fast and there won’t be room for everyone. Some difficult decisions lie ahead for the UFC brass.
So far it is shaping up to be a tremendous night.
