For the past few days there has been constant speculation with regard to who will be next to take on Conor McGregor in the Octagon…
Although many have suggested that a rematch with Jose Aldo or a title defence against Frankie Edgar will be next up for the notorious Irishman, recent comments from inside McGregor’s camp have confirmed that the featherweight champion has another fight in mind.
McGregor has spoken for some time about his ambition to move up a weight class as he hopes to challenge for the light weight belt. Speaking on Irish radio during the week, McGregor’s head coach John Kavanagh confirmed that ambition stating that the Irishman is hoping to secure a lightweight title fight early next year.
“I think we’re looking at late March or mid-April and the lightweight belt. That’s what I think is next,” Kavanagh said speaking to the Breakfast Republic on 2FM.
“That’s being contested Saturday night so whoever the unfortunate winner of that belt is faces Conor.”
Rafael Dos Anjos is currently the lightweight champion, however the Brazilian must defend his crown against the highly rated Donold ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone tonight and, according to many, the introduction of increasingly strict drug testing in Brazil could well expose Dos Anjos this weekend.
If that turns out to be the case, then there is every chance that the ‘Notorious’ and the ‘Cowboy’ could be set to lock horns sooner rather than later. The two have already engaged in an epic verbal duel earlier this year and many think that a clash between the pair would draw even more interest than the Aldo fight.
Although McGregor’s fighting style is well rounded, many believe that his ground game could be his downfall. Cerrone on the other hand is infamously dangerous in this regard and, based on the video below, McGregor has a lot more to be concerned about than the American’s trash talking ability.
