Frankie Edgar becomes the first man to have an ‘Answer’ for Yair Rodriguez.
Despite creeping up on 36 years of age, Edgar is not going to go gently into the twilight of his career. The New Jersey native produced a suffocating, dominant performance against the much hyped Yair Rodriguez. With a huge Mexican backing, the 24-year-old had been primed for a promotional push from the UFC.
The former lightweight champion seemed to have been trotted out as a stepping stone to further ‘El Pantera’s’ career. Somebody forgot to deliver the memo to Edgar.
Utilising his superior wrestling game, Edgar secured a big take down in the first round. He proceeded to rain down bombs on the Mexican, nearly closing his left eye by the end of the round. Round two followed the exact same trend. Despite an attempted kneebar from Rodriguez, Edgar soon found himself in top control.
From there, he dished out some punishment, went to side control and ended the round doling out elbows and punches from guard.

After some consultation at the break in the round, the fight was stopped, mercifully, under doctor’s orders. The damage to Rodriguez’s eye looked substantial and it was certainly the correct decision.
‘The Answer’ may be in the later stages of his career but he’s not ready to be anyone’s stepping stone just yet.
