According to UFC president Dana White, the promotion’s reigning 170lb king, Robbie Lawler, is likely to return at either UFC 201 or 202 and at this point it appears that his opponent will be Tyron Woodley.
White revealed the rough details of Lawler’s return in an interview that he gave to AXS TV(via MMAJunkie) while he was in attendance at an RFA show on Friday night.
In Lawler’s last outing he held onto the title by the skin of his teeth, taking a contentious split decision victory over Carlos Condit at UFC 195 in January. It was his 2nd defence of the title which he snatched from Johny Hendricks back in December of 2014.
Woodley’s last fight was some 15 months ago, at UFC 183 in January of 2015. On that night, “The Chosen One” earned a split nod over Kevin Gastelum.
Later in the year, the 33-year-old welterweight contender was promised the next shot at Lawler when his eliminator with the aforementioned Hendricks had to be aborted due to the former champion’s inability to make weight. Soon after that, Woodley made it clear that he intended to sit-out and wait for his title opportunity, rather than risk a loss or an injury that might scupper his plans.

Woodley is 4-1 in his last 5 fights, a run that includes victories over Josh Koscheck, Dong Hyun Kim and Carlos Condit. His only loss during that stretch came via decision to former title-contender Rory MacDonald.
