Dana White Confirms Mouth-Watering Welterweight Striking Battle For February 24 In England

Darren Till’s performance against Donald Cerrone in Gdansk a couple of weeks ago really got the attention of the MMA world. Just as importantly for the Liverpudlian, it seems to have really grasped the attention of the promotion’s big dogs. So much so, that UFC president Dana White has revealed the company is moving their February 24th Fight Night event from Orlando, Florida to England.

White confirmed the schedule change during a Q&A in California on Tuesday evening(via Lance Pugmire of the LATimes), although he did not name a venue or even a city for the event. Since his first-round stoppage victory over Cerrone, however, the Muay Thai specialist has been campaigning for the UFC to make a trip to his home town. That now seems a likely prospect.

And the UFC aren’t handing Till a gimme so that he can be confident of victory in front of his countrymen. No, what they’ve given him is another massive opportunity to shoot up the rankings towards reigning champion Tyron Woodley.

Till will face Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson at the event.

Thompson just recorded a dominant and very impressive points win over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 217 in New York on Saturday. He went into the fight ranked as the number two contender, just behind Robbie Lawler. The rankings have yet to be updated since, but we’d imagine that Thompson will stay put.

One has to respect ‘Wonderboy’ for taking the fight against Till. Though the young Englishman is riding a significant wave of momentum, he is only ranked eighth in the 170-pound division at present. But he looks a threat to anyone. Thus, it’s a high-risk, low-reward fight for Thompson.

Stylistically speaking, this is a mouth-watering match-up of elite strikers – perhaps the top two in the division.
