UFC on Fox 29, which is scheduled for April 14th, does not yet have a venue but it does have a juicy main event.
Speaking to Megan Olivi on Fox Sports 1 last night, Dana White announced that lightweight savages Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje will collide in the homeless card’s headliner.
“Another ridiculous fight. We have nothing but great fights lined up for the first quarter here,” added White.
Poirier vs. Gaethje is indeed a ridiculous fight.
Poirier is coming off of an impressive win over former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, whom he submitted in the third round of the bloody UFC Fight Night 120 main event in Norfolk, Virginia last November. That win brought the 29-year-old veteran’s record since he made the leap from featherweight to lightweight back in 2015 to a stellar 6-1 with 1 no contest.
He currently sits at number 6 in the UFC’s official 155-pound rankings.
Gaethje, on the other hand, will be looking to rebound from the first defeat of his entire career. The former WSOF champion debuted in the UFC in July 2017, finishing Michael Johnson in the second round of a scorcher at The Ultimate Fighter 25 Finale to move to 18-0. In his second octagon outing, however, ‘The Highlight’ suffered a third-round KO defeat to former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez in another belter at UFC 218 in December.
In spite of that setback, Gaethje is still ranked one spot ahead of Poirier in the rankings, in fifth.
The form guides and the rankings aren’t what makes this fight a mouth-watering prospect, however. These two are among the most consistently exciting fighters in the world right now and this seems like another guaranteed barn-burner.
