Following Cathal Pendred’s shock retirement on Wednesday, Conor McGregor paid tribute to his Straight Blast Gym colleague and friend via social media.
Cathal Pendred has often been criticized for his technical shortcomings, but “The Punisher” deserves a greater level of respect than he has been afforded by the fans.
If you don’t agree, maybe you should read Conor McGregor’s Facebook tribute to his now retired teammate.
“The Notorious” left for the United States on Monday morning and has set up camp in California ahead of his gargantuan UFC 194 showdown with Jose Aldo. Upon learning of Pendred’s announcement, however, McGregor took time out of his busy schedule to pay homage to his friend and illustrate why the 28-year-old’s career has been so remarkable.
The UFC interim-featherweight champion complimented the “hard work, iron grit and never say die attitude” that allowed “a man who came from zero combat sports background” to build a career in MMA. He also reminded fans of the fact that Cathal’s 4-2 UFC record included several wins over fighters who were busted for performance enhancing drug use after they fought him.
For these reasons, suggested McGregor, Pendred deserves “endless respect”.
You think Irish Warrior, you think Cathal!
You think against all odds underdog, you think Cathal!
You think come from behind victory, you think Cathal!!
Cathal brother, you are a legend!
McGregor finished by thanking Pendred for “all the rounds and all the help over the years”, and expressed his confidence in his friend’s ability to achieve all his future goals away from the octagon.
You are a champion at whatever you decide to do in life!
