Conor McGregor suffered his first defeat in the UFC on Saturday night, after being submitted by Nate Diaz. The outspoken Irishman is now in a tricky position, as he may have to return to the 145lb division with his tail firmly between his legs.
There are several potential candidates being lined up for his next fight.
Former featherweight title-holder José Aldo has called for a rematch, after McGregor made light work of him in 13 seconds last December. However, Frankie Edgar is also due a title shot, and could step in to face the Dubliner.
Should McGregor choose to pursue his lightweight dream, Donald Cerrone may be an option, while it is not impossible that the promotion will choose to carry through with the scheduled fight of McGregor and Rafael Dos Anjos.
Bookmakers Paddy Power have released the odds for the featherweight champion’s next bout.
There are a lot of options for McGregor, and he will be back in the octagon sooner rather than later. It is still likely that he will be on the card at UFC 200, and there will be no shortage of opponents queueing up to take him on.
Aldo remains favourite, and following his recent war of words with the champion, the promotion may be tempted to give him the rematch.
