Artem Lobov turned in an extremely gutsy performance at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee on Saturday night, but ultimately dropped a unanimous decision to Cub Swanson in the main event of UFC Fight Night 108.
In reality, few expected Lobov to emerge victorious. He came into the bout unranked by the UFC, while Swanson has been a fixture in the upper-echelons of the 145-pound rankings for years and sat in fourth spot prior to the opening buzzer.
Under the circumstances, Lobov deserves credit for even entering a competitive showing and for the fact that he went the full five-round distance. On Twitter, in the aftermath of the fight, ‘The Russian Hammer’ did indeed receive kudos from his peers in the MMA community.
However, the words that are likely to mean most to the SBG representative during these hours of disappointed contemplation are those of his regular sparring partner and friend, Conor McGregor.
Shortly after the fight, the UFC lightweight champion took to Instagram to express his pride in Lobov’s performance.
McGregor was absent from Lobov’s side tonight because his longtime partner Dee Devlin is due to give birth to the the couple’s first child any day now. For personal reasons, SBG Ireland head coach John Kavanagh was also absent from Lobov’s corner(you can view Kavanagh’s comments on the fight here).
This meant that SBG Ireland striking coach Owen Roddy was Lobov’s head cornerman for the fight. Roddy did an excellent job, but the difference in class between Lobov and Swanson was evident. There is very little that either he, Kavanagh or McGregor could have done to influence the result of the contest.
