The world of professional wrestling appears to be still quite bitter about the jibe directed at the WWE by Conor McGregor following his redemptive victory over Nate Diaz at UFC 202.
Now some five months in the past but seemingly a world away in the history of the UFC, McGregor, while high on life and back to his unapologetic and flamboyant self, posted this scorching dig at the WWE roster.
I didn't mean no disrespect to the @wwe fans. What I meant to say was that I'd slap the head off your entire roster. And twice on Sunday's.
— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) August 7, 2016
As expected, the roster in question were less than impressed with the Irishman.
Now it appears that in a world where egos are inflated to theatrical extremes, McGregor’s hilarious dig is still a sore subject for some.
At a recent Twitter Q&A between WWE star Randy Orton and fans, ‘The Viper’ was asked about McGregor’s tweet.
@RandyOrton do you think you can whoop @TheNotoriousMMA ass if he transitioned to Wrestling in the WWE ?

Orton, for his part, took the bait and fired back a scorcher of a response.
If he gains 120lbs im here. Until then, #205Live bro https://t.co/XZdWqCvt2V

The #205Live Orton refers to is the WWE’s cruiserweight show that features the smaller athletes on the WWE roster.
Needless to say, fans of Orton and the WWE were quick to respond to the dismissive and cutting retort.

In a world known for it’s scripted theatrics, the resurrecting of McGregor’s comment could be another well choreographed move by Orton and the WWE.
Though he is taking a break from his record breaking endeavours in the UFC, an appearance at WrestleMania 33 in April has long been mooted for the UFC lightweight champion.
What better way to give such an appearance credibility than by creating a back story with one of the WWE’s biggest stars.
