Vociferous Criticism Of UFC & Outpouring Of Concern For Bisping Follows Shanghai Event

At the beginning of November, Michael Bisping was the UFC middleweight champion and was on a five-fight winning run. With a few days yet remaining before the penultimate month of the year gives way to December, ‘The Count’ is now an ex-champ and, in the wake of today’s events in Shanghai, is suddenly on the very first two-fight skid of his entire 13-year professional career.

When the 38-year-old Bisping, just a week removed from his defeat to Georges St-Pierre at UFC 217 on November 4th, signed to replace Anderson Silva in the UFC Shanghai main event on short notice, he was roundly lauded by the MMA community for his bravery and fighting spirit. There were, however, voices that questioned the wisdom of allowing the Englishman to do so. Bisping was badly hurt by a St-Pierre left hook and subsequently choked unconscious, yet the UFC were willing to allow him to step back into the octagon just three weeks later.

After Gastelum starched Bisping in brutal fashion earlier today, those critical voices multiplied, grew louder and became more vociferous, while there was also an outpouring of deep concern for a true legend of the sport.

Bisping received a 30-day medical suspension following his loss to St-Pierre, but these suspensions can be waived if a doctor provides clearance. Speaking to the media earlier this week, Bisping said that he had undergone a battery of medical tests before being cleared to compete.

Still, it was worrying to hear the veteran say that he sparred everyday in the week before fight-week. He had a lengthy camp ahead of the ‘GSP’ fight, one which undoubtedly featured plenty of intense rounds of sparring. He took a fairly one-sided beating in the bout itself, jumped back into sparring after just a one-week break and then suffered another brutal defeat at the heavy hands of Gastelum.

As Mike Chiappetta tweeted, one can’t help but worry about the long-term ramifications of this stint for Bisping, who has already accumulated plenty of punishment over the years.
