As Cody Garbrandt and TJ Dillashaw clash as coaches on this series of The Ultimate Fighter, fans have been given an insight into where all the animosity between the pair stems from.
TUF 25: The Redemption is now being shown weekly on our screens and is adding to the growing excitement ahead of Garbrandt’s first defence of his bantamweight title against Dillashaw at UFC 213 in July.
In recent weeks on the show we have seen Cody basically attack TJ, grabbing the challenger by the throat as the pair went head-to-head in the locker room. We have seen Urijah Faber square off in a heated argument with 31-year-old, Dillashaw, where Faber was backed by “No Love” and the rest of Team Alpha Male.
Of course, the seed that planted this fierce rivalry was TJ’s supposed betrayal of Team Alpha Male, the gym owned by Faber and home to Garbrandt. Dillashaw was a team member there with the UFC hall of famer and current 135 lbs champ until he decided to follow another coach, Duane Ludwig, to Colorado in preparation for his fight with Dominick Cruz back in January 2016.
The ex-bantamweight champ remains adamant he was forced out the door by Faber and co. and states he did not turn his back on Team Alpha Male. His former teammates go with the storyline that Dillashaw is lying and that he betrayed them by leaving the gym he had been treated so well in, and trained to be a champion in.
The rivalry has turned bitter and in the champion’s latest interview with Matt Sera, a stinging attack is launched on his nemesis. Garbrandt openly accuses TJ of steroid usage in a reaction to his ex-training partner’s attempts to be cordial with him on set of TUF. “No Love” has zero interest in a friendly build-up to their scrap.
