Jose Aldo wasn’t the only pound for pound rated UFC champion to suffer a devastating defeat on Saturday night, as Chris Weidman was also viciously usurped from the throne of the middleweight division.
Weidman, who picked up the 185lb belt with a stunning knockout of Anderson Silva, made a promising start in his bout with Luke Rockhold, but there was a swing in momentum in the second stanza. From that point on, Weidman was dominated by the rampant and ferociously determined challenger.
Following on from a terrifyingly one-sided third round, towards the close of which Weidman really should have been rescued by referee Herb Dean, Rockhold put the finishing touches to his masterful performance in the fourth.
Due to it’s thorough nature, Weidman’s loss was in many ways even more definitive and painful than Aldo’s.
However, due to his championship mentality, Weidman has already framed the experience as a positive and life-changing one, which will only spur him on to greater things.
In a Facebook post on Monday, The “All-American” displayed his class, dignity and unbreakable spirit in an inspirational message to his fans.
“I will remember this moment forever”, started Weidman. “It has already changed me for the better. The motivation I have inside myself has never been stronger”.
Rockhold may have been dominant this time around, but with Weidman’s determination and mindset, how could you count him out in a rematch?
