The NYSAC were far more vigilant to tricks today at the Bellator 180 weigh-ins.
The NYSAC suffered a huge backlash throughout the MMA world, following the farcical weigh-in incident with Daniel Cormier at UFC 210 back in April.
Having learned their lesson the hard way, the commission were far more alert to fighters attempting to trick the scales today, at the Bellator 180 weigh ins.
Sergio Da Silva (6-8) is scheduled to fight Matt Rizzo (9-2) in a catchweight bout (130lbs) on the Madison Square Garden card tomorrow night. Da Silva looked to be struggling with the weight immediately and proceeded to try every trick in the book in order to beat the scales. He attempted to stand with a foot off the scales, with his feet at one side of the scales and with his feet at angles. He even tried to get a member of his team to hold the towel, alá Cormier. Da Silva at one point tried to leave and come back to weigh in later.
The NYSAC had learned their lesson, from the UFC 210 fiasco, and ordered Da Silva to stand still. It took nearly two minutes before the official weight was actually registered. he weighed in 7lbs over the limit at 137.6lbs. He will not face any penalties however, as the bout is already at a catchweight. Matt Rizzo, meanwhile, tipped the scales at 133lbs.
The card is headlined by Chael Sonnen versus Wanderlei Silva. It also features Strabane and SBG’s own, James Gallagher versus Chinzo Machida.
