Ariel Helwani Provides Major Update Regarding UFC 219 Main Event

Discussions surrounding a mooted fight between UFC women’s featherweight champion Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino and former women’s bantamweight champ Holly Holm are not going swimmingly.

It has long been reported that the fight was being targeted for the promotion’s big end-of-year spectacular on December 30th in Las Vegas – UFC 219 – but according to MMAFighting journalist Ariel Helwani the showdown is now looking “less and less likely.”

Negotiations, added Helwani in a recent tweet, have “hit a major road block.”

The nature of the obstacle is unknown, but early last month Justino’s manager George Prajin told MMAJunkie that he was trying to negotiate a new deal for his client, which would have to be agreed upon before any fight could be signed.

Prajin said that negotiations had been “pretty aggressive” but that ‘Cyborg’ just wanted to be “paid her value.”

Later in October, Justino stated that she wanted a guarantee that USADA would test Holm and her an equal amount of times leading up to the fight. Holm, however, gave her consent to this in a subsequent Instagram post.

At a Q&A in California on Tuesday night, White claimed that the UFC would announce a main event for UFC 219 later this week and that Conor McGregor’s octagon return remained a possibility.

Last week, McGregor told the media that he wanted a guarantee of equity in the UFC or co-promoter status in future fights before he would commit to a bout. If the promotion haven’t already come to a deal with the Irishman, they might be forced to placate him very quickly. At present, there are very few fights that matchmakers could conceivably book and place into the UFC 219 headline slot other than McGregor vs. interim champion Tony Ferguson. Holm vs. Justino is one of them.
