It appears as though the speculation surrounding Conor McGregor’s next opponent is nearing a conclusion as the brash Dubliner had dinner with the UFC brass, and all signs now point to one man.

So, is it going to be Floyd Mayweather, is it going to be Nate Diaz or will it be the winner of Jose Aldo vs Frankie Edgar?

After weeks of constant speculation and an insistence by Dana White that the relationship between McGregor and the UFC is not in disrepute, the pair sat down for dinner on Wednesday night to discuss the next opponent for the Notorious. They were also discussing the matters surrounding UFC 200.

While much of the speculation in recent weeks has been about a potential boxing match between McGregor and Mayweather, it now appears as though the Notorious and the UFC are eager to make the Diaz rematch happen. There is still a lot to be worked out but, according to Ariel Helwani from MMA Fighting, all parties are agreeable. The last piece of the puzzle is settling on a date and venue.

Diaz made it very clear at the UFC 200 press conference that the only fight he wanted was the McGregor fight so one would assume that it is just minor details left to be ironed out, before a date can be announced. UFC 202 is still the most likely event for the much anticipated bout. Helwani is not noted for putting out rumours and is one of the most credible sources for MMA news.

An announcement could be coming any day now.
