With a lot of confusion currently surrounding the lightweight division and its champion, Ariel Helwani asked his followers who they believed to be the greatest 155 lbs fighter in the world…
It has now been close to 14 months since Conor McGregor last stepped inside the Octagon. However, somehow, the ‘Notorious’ Irishman has yet to be stripped of his lightweight title with fans growing increasingly fed up with the UFC’s bizarre stance on the SBG star.
Speaking at a UFC 223 press event last week, Dana White announced that the winner of the Brooklyn main event would be the ‘undisputed lightweight champion’. With Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov due to face off in that bout, the logical conclusion was that McGregor had been stripped of his 155 lbs strap. However, when asked directly if the lightweight title had been officially taken from the Dubliner, White eventually acknowledged that the promotion had not yet made that decision.
Speaking on the MMA hour on Monday night, Tony Ferguson revealed his frustration at the UFC’s indecision, slating the sidestepping as a ‘bunch of shit’.
“They were saying: ‘You guys are fighting for the undisputed title’. That was right before they told me that I was gonna fight Conor McGregor. And then the whole bunch of shit just went down…”
“Dana White’s telling us one thing on one part of the curtain, and on the other side he’s saying: ‘No, Conor McGregor’s the champion’. I love Dana, but what the fuck, dude?”
With the confusion that currently surrounds the lightweight division and who the undisputed champion actually is, Ariel Helwani ran a poll asking his followers who they actually believed to be the greatest lightweight in the world. Interestingly, the results didn’t make for pretty reading for either of the men who currently hold 155 lbs belts in the UFC.
If you wish to vote in Helwani’s poll (which is still running) you can do so below.
#themmahour question of the week #2:
