Ariel Helwani Drops Worrying Update Regarding Conor McGregor’s Status As Lightweight Champion

The UFC is set to make a huge announcement regarding Conor McGregor’s future on Friday evening…

Earlier this week, reports suggested that Conor McGregor would be stripped of his lightweight title so that Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson could throw down for the undisputed crown at UFC 223.

However, on Thursday afternoon, a press release suggested that the ‘Notorious’ Irishman would not be stripped and instead, Tony Ferguson would be defending his interim title against the undefeated Russian at the Brooklyn event.

Overjoyed McGregor fans lauded the decision drawing the conclusion that the SBG star must have committed to fighting the winner of the UFC 223 main event given the fact that he had been allowed to maintain his status as the 155lbs champion.

However, another twist has already suggested that the UFC has indeed elected to strip the 29-year-old with Ariel Helwani reporting that a new press release has now described the Nurmagomedov vs Ferguson bout as a ‘lightweight title’ fight.

It’s still too soon to say with any level of certainty whether the Irish champion will be stripped or not. However, with a UFC 223 press conference set to take place on Friday evening, it now seems like a matter of time before the matter is clarified.
