Ariel Helwani Attempts To Make Sense Of The UFC Lightweight Title Fiasco

Who is the UFC lightweight champion right now?

We left the UFC 222 and 223 press conference in Boston on Friday night with even more questions than we had going into it.

Everybody had been under the illusion that Friday night’s presser would provide some clarity in the UFC’s lightweight division, however, in truth, the total opposite transpired. Upon the announcement of Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov for UFC 223, fans eagerly waited to see if said bout was for the interim belt in the division or whether Conor McGregor had been stripped and the April 7 showdown was for the unified 155-lbs title.

UFC president Dana White did nothing but fan the flames of speculation and confusion around the whole situation when he introduced Ferguson, formerly the interim champ at lightweight, as the undisputed champion and stating that the ‘El Cucuy’ vs. Khabib clash was for the real belt. All the while, White refused to reveal that McGregor had been stripped of his title.

It was a chaotic and pretty much unprecedented scene. The entire press conference descended into a wave of confusion.

When MMAFighting.com journalist Ariel Helwani put the question straight to Dana, “has Conor been stripped, yes or no?” White responded abruptly, “next question please.”

Although White did provide a little more clarity on the scenario in a later backstage interview, which you can read about here, Helwani amongst the majority of MMA fans are still trying to make sense of the whole thing.

While right now it may appear as clear as mud, let’s hope it’s not too long before some long overdue normality returns to the lightweight division.
