UFC 207, which takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Friday night, is headlined by a pair of title fights at 135lbs – Amanda Nunes vs Ronda Rousey for the women’s bantamweight strap and Dominick Cruz vs Cody Garbrandt for the men’s bantamweight belt.
Both are mouth-watering scraps and both have really intriguing backstories.
The women’s title fight is not only about the return of Rousey and her long-awaited shot at redemption but it’s also a chance for an ambitious champion to really cement her status. Nunes, the first openly gay UFC titlist, has often seemed like an extra in the Ronda Rousey show throughout the build-up, but a win for ‘The Lioness’ at UFC 207 will ensure that she never receives such treatment again.
The men’s title fight is the latest chapter in a near decade-long story that has always gripped the MMA world – Dominick Cruz vs Team Alpha Male. It was over nine years ago that Cruz first fought TAM founder Urijah Faber. On that occasion the ‘Dominator’ came up short, losing to Faber via submission, but he would go on to score two wins over Faber, a pair of victories over TAM’s Joseph Benavidez and another over TAM product TJ Dillashaw.
In Garbrandt, Cruz faces a new generation of TAM fighter, a powerful, confident and undefeated young gun determined to succeed where his teammates have so frequently failed.
The latest episode of the UFC’s excellent Countdown series was released on Monday and it takes a close, detailed look at the backgrounds to these two quality match-ups.
